There is often the need to compare both data and database structures from two databases either on the same server or on different servers. Most text editors have a built-in process to allow you to do a diff and identify any differences between the two files, but comparing data is not quite that easy. Using this diff process is great if you only want to compare a few files, but what if you need to scan your entire database to look for differences? As with anything you can always create your own...

Trying to remember all of the object names, parameters and columns within tables becomes quite daunting for very large data models. This is where GUI tools such as Enterprise Manager and SQL Server Management Studio provided a big boost to the database market for SQL Server. The ability to do most of your work through a graphical interface versus having to do everything command line makes users much more productive and some time consuming tasks can be done with a point and click. There are se...

Application Center Test is one of those tools you don't know you need until someone shows you how useful it really is. I covered the value of Application Center Test for measuring performance, which is quite critical because you can use those measurements to make improvements, set goals, a...

Large Microsoft .NET Framework applications can contain hundreds or thousands of classes organized into different assemblies that constitute distinct layers in the application’s architecture. While most developers work exclusively with a particular section of the architecture, senior developers and system architects are typically responsible for code and design decisions that impact various pieces of the architecture and their interconnections. For these code changes and architectural decisions,...

One of the major additions to the Microsoft® .NET Framework 3.5 is LINQ, a set of classes and language enhancements designed to offer a universal data-querying syntax. With LINQ to Objects, LINQ to XML, and LINQ to SQL, you can query arrays and collections, XML documents, and database tables using a similar syntax with rich features like IntelliSense® and compile-time type checking. LINQ syntax, however, can be downright confusing for developers who have spent the better part of their programmin...

Have you ever wondered where Enterprise Manager gets its information from and how you can retrieve the same data without using Enterprise Manager? Well it's not a big secret. Most of the information that is displayed in the GUI is based on information gathered from queries, but what queries? If you have ever looked at the system tables to try to figure this out, it is not as straight forward as you think. So how do you find out what queries Enterprise Manager is using?...

One of the things that drives me crazy is having to format my SQL statements. It is hard enough writing the statements in the first place, but then having to take the time to format the code, make keywords uppercase, using tabs to align column names, tables names etc... is just a lot of work. But it is one of those things that if you don't do it now it never happens except for the next time that you edit that code and spend a bunch of time formatting it anyway....

A common problem noted among database managers and network administrators is the number of unauthorized SQL instances on a network. Without proper application of service packs and hotfixes these instances create holes through which hackers and others can exploit the database infrastructure. Another situation you may find yourself in is needing to connect to a server instance whose name you can't recall. In either case you can find what you need by using OSQL or SQLCMD....

Maintaining documentation about your SQL Server databases is a big task. No matter how many developers or DBAs you may have, keeping documentation current is a challenge. In most cases you only need view a portion of the database defined in an easy to view format, but if this is something you don't keep up with on a constant basis your efforts will never yield up to the minute documentation. In addition, SQL Server stores all kinds of meta data about your database objects, so it makes sense t...

As a developer, it can be tough to switch languages. For instance, if you are using Visual Basic® .NET and need to write some C#, it can take time to remember the equivalent C# syntax. Happily, it's rare that as developers using the Microsoft®.NET Framework we need to write both Visual Basic .NET and C# on a routine basis. There is another language we write in quite a bit—SQL. But unlike Visual Basic .NET and C#, both of which provide IntelliSense® to help us remember language keywords, Visual S...
