In past developing multithreaded applications in VB was tedious task. Many times spawning new threads actually spawn errors :-) The picture has changed in VB.NET. VB.NET now has simplicity of Java while dealing with threads. We will see a simple example of running your code in a separate thread in following section....

In case you've never used it, the System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker is an extremely useful component that makes it easy to process operations on a different thread, but it has one major drawback. All data in and out of it is passed as System.Object. When .NET Framework 2.0 was released in November 2005, Generics were introduced. The advantage of Generics is well explained by Microsoft here:

"Generics provide the solution to a limitation in earlier versions of the Common Language...

When writing complicated applications, you may need to do some tasks in the background. For example, you may need to write code to periodically check if an external database server is up and send alert e-mails automatically to production support folks if it is down. Another example is, you may want to monitor a folder that contains files uploaded by Internet users and process these files as they come in.
If you know C or C++, you can use the CreateThread function in kernel32.dll. This functio...

Do you occasionally need multithreaded timed-out operations? Let me say, this is a very basic implementation, but is the best solution for trying many different methods for completing your operation before you choose the best one, and it lets you start from a small basic (but so easy to get) multithreaded stuff that you can grow or change as much as you like since this class is released under GNU LGPL compatible license (means I don't care anything)....

Back in the days of VB 6 and earlier, writing a multithreaded VB application was hard. MS even told ambitious VB developers not to do it, the hacks required were not going to be supported, endorsed, blessed, etc. No soup for you.

With the release of VB.NET, we VB developers finally get to play. I'll take you through the basics to get you started. Once you have made your first multithreaded application, you will officially be 'dangerous.'...

Multi-threaded applications are heavily used these days. We create multiple threads for many different purposes. A thread may be working as a TCP/IP listener, another may be querying a database periodically, yet another may be trying to connect and download some stuff from the Internet. In a typical Windows environment, we can not let the UI thread deal with all these. Because, the UI thread is so expensive that it needs to attend user actions such as responding to mouse and keyboard events rath...

The BackgroundWorker component replaces and adds functionality to the System.Threading namespace; however, the System.Threading namespace is retained for both backward compatibility and future use, if you choose. For more information, see BackgroundWorker Component Overview. Windows Forms uses the single-threaded apartment (STA) model because Windows Forms is based on native Win32 windows that are inherently apartment-threaded. The STA model implies that a window can be created on any thread, bu...

This walkthrough demonstrates how to create a multithreaded application that searches a text file for occurrences of a word. The walkthrough consists of four main parts:

* Defining a class with a method that can be run on a thread independently
* Handling events raised by other threads
* Starting a new thread to run a method
* Implementing a Cancel button that stops the thread...

Supplying and returning values in a multithreaded application is complicated because the constructor for the thread class must be passed a reference to a procedure that takes no arguments and returns no value. The following sections show some simple ways to supply parameters and return values from procedures on separate threads....

A thumbnail is a small representation of an image. The Image class provides a method called GetThumbnailImage, which is used to create a thumbnail. This method's first two parameters are the width and height of the thumbnail image. The third parameter is Image.GetThumbnailImageAbort, which is not used in GDI+ version 1.0 but must be passed for compatibility. The fourth parameter must be of type IntPtr.Zero. This parameter is not used in the current version. If both the width and height parameter...

In the physical world, two workers are twice as productive as one. In the programming world, using additional threads safely can increase an application's productivity and add a depth and richness that help the user to be more productive too. The drawback has been that multi-threaded applications typically have been harder to write and debug. This is still true to some extent; but with .NET, multithreading is getting easier to use....

Multi threading is one of the most powerful concepts in programming. Using multithreading, you can break a complex task into multiple threads that execute independently of one another. One particularly good application of multithreading is in tasks that are synchronous in nature, such as Web services calls. By default, Web services calls are blocking calls—that is, the caller code will not continue until the Web service returns the result. But because Web services calls are often slow, this coul...
