Sometimes we're anxious to create some good applications, and we forget simple things like, code being repeated in various pages. For example - when we want to create a connection to Database, we write the same code in all the ASP pages, which can be avoided easily, by creating a separate .asp or .inc page with the instructions, and then we can include (SSI - Server Side Includes) the file in all our ASP pages....

Flash is a hot technology to create interactive web sites. Basically, web site development falls in three prime categories:

* Static sites
* Dynamic sites
* Interactive sites

The difference between a dynamic and an interactive site is the level of control that the user has over the web site. In other words, if the user is allowed to go farther than simply changing the appearance of a page (dynamic) and is able to work with it as if the page was a productivity sof...

ASP.NET is a new and powerful technology for writing dynamic web pages. It's a convergence of two major Microsoft technologie's, Active Server Pages (ASP) and .NET. ASP is a relative old-timer on the web computing circuit and has provided a sturdy, fast, and effective way of creative dynamic web pages for more than five years now. .NET is the new kid on the block and is a whole suite of technologies designed by Microsoft with the aim of revolutionizing the way in which all programming developmen...

The company where I work has an ASP.Net Web Application that tracks employee attendance. A link to the Attendance application is in the Startup folder of every user’s PC. The application records on a daily basis the time a user first logs onto his or her PC. On startup, the application determines the network user id and checks the application database to see if the user has already logged in that day. If he or she has not, the date and time, along with the user id is recorded in the database. If...

A lot of times, we as a web master want to include a contact us form in our web site to gather sales questions from our site visitors. I can see that most of the people actually just include an email like sales@domainname in their Contact Us Page. I know that one works well if you just starting your site. However as your site is getting popular, you will notice that lots of spam email comes to your inbox and you probably has to spend hours and hours just to delete each of the spam email and also...

Web server controls can be customized by setting properties or by using CSS styles. Some allow you to customize their look through ASP.NET templates. An ASP.NET template is a mix of HTML elements and ASP.NET controls that make up the layout for a particular area of the control. Templates are not the same as styles. Styles primarily refer to CSS stylesheets and affect graphical properties such as colors, font, border style, cell spacing, and so forth. With styles, the control's layout remains unc...

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a member of the TCP/IP suite and a protocol that is designed to save network administrators a lot of time and effort. A successful DHCP implementation can do just that.

As you probably already know, every computer that communicates on a network does so via an IP (layer 4) address. The goal of DHCP is to provide a mechanism of automated address delivery, to give every computer its own IP address without an administrator having to type them ...

The attached Java file contains three methods: the div() method provides integer division with rounding towards negative infinity, which Java does not provide by itself (the normal division and modulus operations round towards zero). Use of this function makes the other methods usable with dates before 1970 because it will handle negative numbers correctly.

The wdnum() method returns the number of weekdays (excluding weekends) that have passed since Monday, 29 December 1969. It works by c...

ASP.NET Dynamic Gradient Handler

Gradients are an essential tool for any serious graphic designer. Disciplined use of gradients can provide a simple professional touch to virtually any graphical layout. However, HTML and CSS provide no intrinsic support for gradients. Generally a tool such as Photoshop is used to save a static image file that is then tiled as a background. While this approach is effective, it can be tedious and inflexible because it requires an additional tool to manage the images.

The GradientHandler ca...

There are quite a few pager controls out there. I haven't, however, found any that give one the choice to use either postbacks or plain hyperlinks. This control was born out of a wish to have paging that uses the traditional ASP.NET postback model on one page, and on another using URL rewritting and caching. I also wanted chunking of page ranges, similar to the paging found on Amazon.com. This is my first article on CodeProject....

Platform Neutral and Transparent Encryption of Sensitive Customer Information

To minimize damages from a security breach, online businesses should encrypt sensitive customer information (passwords, credit card numbers, etc.) stored in their databases. Recent incidents that ran headlines have only made this practice a must [1].

Ideally, an implementation of the encryption should be platform neutral so that platform migration cost is low (for example, jumping from the .NET camp to J2EE)....
